The name Umathum originated from the Bavarian-Frankischen region and goes by the suffix "thum", but is interpreted according to the original "um den Dom" (around the cathedral).

At the time of Maria Theresia the forefathers of the Umathums settled at Lake Neusiedl.  Even then wine growing played a significant role in this family's life.  Up to the 1980's the business was run as a mixed agricultural farm.  Today wine growing is the main focus for the family.  since 1985 Josef Umathum, born in 1960, has been responsible for the worldwide, renowned wine of this house.

By producing excellent wines during some very difficult years this winery has made a first class, international reputation for itself.  Since 1990 it belongs to the best wineries of Austria.
